Chilika boat tragedy death toll reaches six, all missing bodies fished out


Khurda/Ganjam: The death toll has risen to six in the boat capsize incident in Chilika Lake with recovery of the bodies of the four more missing persons today.

As per sources, bodies of two women and two children were fished out early in the morning.

Two bodies were recovered yesterday. The mishap occurred last evening at around 5:30 pm when the boat carrying 18 person, including the boatman, capsized due to strong wind and rain in the middle of the lake while returning towards Balugaon from Kalijai temple.

Meanwhile, Chief Fire Officer Sukant Sethi informed that four more bodies were recovered today. Two bodies were fished out yesterday. Over 50 fire personnel, 40-member ORDAF team, six power boats, personnel of Indian Navy, 16 divers and local fishermen were engaged in the rescue operation.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik expressed deep condolences and announced Rs 4 lakh compensation each for the next of the kin of the deceased, who were killed in the boat mishap

The Chief Minister also order for the free medical treatment of the injured persons.
