Chief Secy happy with progress of work for Men’s Hockey World Cup


Bhubaneswar: Chief Secretary Aditya Prasad Padhi expressed satisfaction on the progress of preparation for the Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup to be held at Kalinga Stadium here from November this year.

Chairing the first meeting of the Governing Body for the Hockey Men’s World Cup at the state Secretariat today, Padhi urged various agencies involved to have special focus on the quality of the works.

The Governing Body meeting was also attended by Development Commissioner-cum-Additional Chief Secretary R Balakrishnan, DGP Rajendra Prasad Sharma and International Hockey Federation (FIH) President Narinder Dhruv Batra.

Sports and Youth Services Department Commissioner-cum-Secretary Vishal Kumar Dev informed the Governing Body about the status of constructions in and around the Kalinga Stadium. He informed that two new turfs of Olympic standard have been built inside the Kalinga Stadium for the tournament and the galleries with a capacity of 15,000 are almost completed.

“A mandatory daily review of the under-construction facades of the hockey stadium which are nearing their completion is being undertaken by the Department,” Dev added.

Dev further informed that the opening ceremony of the Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup 2018 will be held at the Athletics Stadium on October 27. The capacity of the said stadium is 12000.

He also mentioned that the fan parks are being constructed for the Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup 2018, will have provisions for large viewing screens, along with stalls for sponsors, and a general activity area for kids.

Bhubaneswar will witness a 10-day long city fest during the course of the Hockey Men’s World Cup 2018. This will feature multiple events like food festivals, storytelling competitions, music, dance and art and craft fests.

Speaking on the occasion, FIH President Narinder Dhruv Batra, termed Odisha as the “sports capital of India.” and expressed his confidence that this edition of Hockey World Cup will be a landmark event.

Batra gifted a T-shirt autographed by the current Indian Men’s and Women’s Hockey Team players to the Chief Secretary.
