Chemical attack injures over 50 children in China

Beijing: Over 50 people, mostly children, were injured after a man sprayed them with corrosive liquid, local authorities said on Tuesday.

They said the 23-year-old surnamed Kong, entered the kindergarten by scaling the wall before spraying the children with sodium hydroxide.

Local authorities in Kaiyuan city, Yunnan province, said the incident occurred on Monday at 3:35 pm (0735 GMT). Some 51 children and three teachers were admitted to hospital for treatment, two with “severe symptoms”.

Police arrested Kong less than an hour after the attack. Violent attacks targeting schoolchildren are not uncommon in China. The past few years have witnessed deadly attacks on children with knives and lethal weapons.
