Bhubaneswar: The CARE Hospitals, Bhubaneswar is setting up an Obesity Clinic with a highly specialised team of experts to provide a holistic approach to the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders and obesity. Odisha presents a very alarming picture when it comes to obesity. According to data, obesity index of the state has seen a quantum jump in the last decade alone. In the NHFS report of 2005-06, 6% men and 6.6% women were obese or overweight. The number in the 2015-16 report has increased to 16.5 in women and 17.2% in men.
There are growing concerns that poor quality sleep or sleep deprivation has been associated with significant health problems such as obesity and a weakened immune system. A survey conducted by The Nielsen of over 5,600 persons across 25 cities has confirmed that 93 per cent of Indians suffer from sleep deprivation; 11 per cent actually fall asleep at work and 87 per cent agree that lack of sleep is taking a toll on their health.
According to Dr Damodar Bindhani – Clinical Director and Head & specialist in sleep medicine, CARE Hospitals, “With the rising prevalence of obesity in our country, including the state of Odisha, it is important for the health experts to look at a comprehensive approach in dealing with the situation,” explaining the reason for setting up the obesity clinic.”
Prolonged sleep curtailment and the accompanying stress response invoke a persistent unspecific production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, best described as chronic low-grade inflammation, and also produces immunodeficiency, which both have detrimental effects on health.
Speaking on the issue, Dr Pragyan Kumar Routary, General Medicine, CARE Hospitals said, “Without sufficient sleep, your body makes fewer cytokines, a type of protein that targets infection and inflammation, effectively creating an immune response. Cytokines are both produced and released during sleep, causing a double whammy if you skimp on shut-eye. Chronic sleep loss even makes the flu vaccine less effective by reducing your body’s ability to respond.”
In context to OSA’s prevalence in different age groups, the elderly have been observed to have high snoring and high excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) with 27% being habitual snorers. OSA is also correlated with heart failure which is 12-16% more prevalent in OSA patients, as per reports by NCBI.
The Obesity Clinic is aimed to help counter the issues on sleep disorder, diabetes and hypertension which are leading to obesity, the contracting scenario is alarming in Odisha, to further curtail the problem CARE Hospitals Bhubaneswar is providing healthcare solutions and medical advisements at the clinic. The panel of doctors present at the clinic is Dr Tapas Mishra, Bariatric Surgeon, Dr Pragyan Kumar Routray – Senior Consultant and Head of Department, Dr Damodar Bindhani – Clinical Director and Head &Specialist in sleep medicine, Dr Tanmay Das – Consultant and Guruprasad Das – Dietician.
