CAB is ‘not a political agenda’: Home Minister
New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has said the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) is ‘not a political agenda’ nor is it against anyone.
The bill was tabled in the Lok Sabha on Monday amid vehement opposition from Northeastern states. The bill aims to provide Indian citizenship to non-Muslim refugees from Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Media reports said there is widespread protest in the Northeast against the bill as they believe it is an attempt by the Central government to nullify the Assam Accord of 1985.
Prominent students organisations in the Northeast have threatened to launch agitation if the bill is passed.
