CAA Protests: Section 144 Imposed Near Red Fort

New Delhi: Ahead of large scale protests over the Citizenship Act, the administration has imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 near Red Fort here on Thursday.

The orders are in the wake of fresh protests for and against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) expected to be held today.

A march has been organised under the banner of ‘Hum Bharat Ke Log’ against the Citizenship Amendment Act from Lal Quila (Red Fort) to Shaheed Bhagat Singh Park (ITO). Police, however, have not granted permission for the march. Another march is planned by the Communist Party of India from Mandi House to Jantar Mantar against the Citizenship Amendment Act and the proposed nationwide National Register of Citizens (NRC).

Former JNU student’s union president Kanhaiya Kumar joined the protest outside the Jamia Millia Islamia on Wednesday and said the demonstration was not just a fight to protect Muslims but to protect the entire country.

Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code prohibits assembly of five or more people, holding public meetings, and carrying fire arms.
