BWF: Nehwal qualifies to pre-quarters, Srikanth to second round


Nanjing: Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal qualified to pre-quarters while Kidambi Srikanth entered the second round of the Badminton World Championship on Tuesday.

Srikanth defeated Ireland’s Nhat Nguyen (21-15 21-16) to qualify to the second round. In the second round, Kidambi will face Spain’s Pablo Abian.

Nehwal in the second round of the women’s single defeated Turkey’s Aliye Demirbag (21-17 21-8) to enter the pre-quarterfinals. Saina, who won bronze and silver in the earlier editions of the championship, will face 2013 Champion Ratchanok Inthanon of Thailand. Olympic medalist Saina got byes in the first round.

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Ashwini Ponnappa defeated 15th seeded German pair Mark Lamsfuss and Isabel Herttrich, registering a 10-21 21-17 21-18 to enter the pre-quarterfinals.

Satwik and Ashwini will face seventh-seeded Malaysian pair of Goh Soon Huat and Shevon Jemie Lai at the pre-quarterfinals.
