Amritsar: In a shocking incident, bullets were fired at the Golden Temple premises in Amritsar on December 2nd, where Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leaders, including party chief Sukhbir Singh Badal, were performing ‘seva’ as part of religious punishments pronounced by Sri Akal Takht Sahib.
The incident occurred while Sukhbir Singh Badal and other SAD leaders were serving as ‘sewadars’ under the ‘tankhah’ (religious punishment) given by the Akal Takht. Badal, who was seated in a wheelchair, escaped unhurt as the bullet struck a nearby wall3. The assailant, identified as Narain Singh, was quickly overpowered by bystanders and subsequently arrested.
The religious punishments were imposed on SAD leaders for mistakes committed during their tenure in the Punjab government from 2007 to 2017. The leaders were directed to perform ‘seva’ at the Golden Temple, which included washing dishes, cleaning shoes, and other humble tasks.
Reacting to the incident, SAD leader Daljit Singh Cheema condemned the attack and called for a high-level judicial inquiry, alleging a conspiracy to destabilize Punjab3. He expressed gratitude for Badal’s safety and emphasized the party’s commitment to continue their ‘seva’ despite the attack.
