Bhubaneswar: Police have arrested two peddlers and seized 324 grams of brown sugar from their possession during a raid near the backside gate of Kalinga Stadium here.
This was informed at a presser on Monday.
The arrested persons were identified as Sk Sagba, (22) and Tanmaya Kumar Sahu (20).
Acting on reliable inputs about the illegal trade, police on Sunday conducted a raid and apprehended the two accused persons. Besides, the cops also seized brown sugar weighing 324 gms, one MC and other incriminating materials from their possession.
During the interrogation, the accused persons disclosed about the procurement of brown sugar from one Sk Fakir of Balasore and two others. Subsequently, a raid was conducted at Balasore and three persons identified as Sk Fakir, Md Sohel, and Sk Habibul were arrested.
A Maruti Car, four motorcycles, Rs 1,84,000 in cash, debit cards and other incriminating materials were also seized.
A case (6/20) was registered against the accused persons under Sections 1(b) and 29 under NDPS Act, 1985 and forwarded to court, the police said.
Speaking to media persons, the police officer said, as many as 11 persons were arrested and 93 grams of brown sugar worth Rs 9 lakh was seized during a special drive by the STF.
As per the direction of DGP, STF had conducted a Special Drive from January 6 to 15. During the drive, raids were conducted at several places in Puri, Balasore, Angul, Khurda, Pipili, Dhenkanal and Bhubaneswar area. Following this, five cases were registered against 11 accused persons under relevant Sections of IPC.
Besides, the cops had also seized a total of 93 grams of brown sugar worth over Rs 9 lakh, three motor bikes, bank accounts, and other incriminating materials.
During the investigation, it was learnt that the accused persons used to procure contraband brown sugar from Balasore, Midnapore/ Murshidabad and Kolkata of West Bengal and used to sell in the locality to the youth, the police said.
