Bargarh: The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) on Sunday said that it will stage demonstration in front of Raj Bhawan and all district headquarters across the State on October 31, protesting against central negligence in payment of crop insurance amount to the farmers.
The party will also submit a memorandum to the Governor addressed to the President of India in this regard.
At a press meet, Senior leaders of the party Snehangini Chhuria and Srimayee Mishra that the Centre paid no heed to the legitimate interest of the farmers even though the Chief Minister has written to the Union Agriculture Minister in this regard.
The poor farmers of Odisha are living in dire straits without getting the outstanding insurance amount which stands at Rs. 500 crores. It is due to the dilly dallying of insurance companies.
The party informed that Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana is a centrally sponsored scheme.
“Therefore, it is the responsibility of the Centre to ensure that the insurance companies pay the insurance amount on time to the poor farmers. As a result lakhs of farmers of the State especially Western Odisha are suffering hardship and pain,” they said.
They further said that the BJD has always been fighting for the rights and betterment of the farmers.
Due to inordinate delay in payment of insurance amount, there has been intense dissatisfaction and anger among lakhs of farmers mainly in Bargarh, Sambalpur, Sonpur, Deogarh, Balangir, Nuapada and Kalahandi districts.
