Bhubaneswar: The Election Commission on Thursday set aside the allegation of the BJP that State Government violated the model code of conduct by transferring two BDOs in Bhadrak district ahead of Dhamnagar by-poll.

In a statement, the chief electoral officer stated that ‘not transferring them would amount to violation of code of conduct.’

“The continuance of these two officers in the district was in violation of the provisions of model code of conduct of Election Commission as no officer connected to the by-election can continue in the constituency for more than three years and in the home district when the model code of conduct is in force,” the statement read.

The transfer was made as per the recommendation of the district election officer, it added.

Notably, Dhamnagar BDO Durga Charan Murmu and Tihidi BDO Basant Sahani had been transferred ahead of the by-poll. Murmu had been working for more than three years while Sahani is a native of the same district.

The EC clarification came in wake of the BJP’s allegation of violation of poll code by the State government.

A BJP delegation on Thursday met Election Commission alleging violation of model code of conduct by Odisha Government which is led by the BJD ahead of the by-poll to Dhamnagar assembly constituency.

The party complained against the “illegal” transfers of two BDOs by Odisha government ahead of by-poll early next month.

The delegation comprising Union minister V Muraleedharan, BJP general secretary Tarun Chugh and party leaders Pratap Chandra Sarangi and N Ramchander Rao also submitted memorandum in this regard.
