‘Bappi Lahiri, You Will Be Missed’: Celebrities Mourn Disco King’s Demise

Mumbai: Singer and music composer Bappi Lahiri, who popularised disco music in India in the 80s and 90s, passed away at Mumbai hospital on Tuesday. He was 69.

Tributes for the legendary musician poured in on social media from the celebrities.

Ajay Devgn tweeted: “Bappi Da was so endearing in person. But, his music had an edge. He introduced a more contemporary style to Hindi film music with Chalte Chalte, Suraksha and Disco Dancer. Dada, you will be missed.”

Nimrat Kaur wrote: “The gates of heaven got shinier today… thank you for an era of such groovy joy Bappi Da.”

Madhur Bhandarkar tweeted: “Shocked to hear of the sad demise of Veteran Music director Bappida, was fortunate to have him sing a track in my film #InduSarkar, an unsurmountable loss to his fans and the music industry. Heartfelt condolences to his family members.”

Sujoy Ghosh wrote: “Long live Bappi lahiri. Legends don’t die.”

Yuvraj Singh: “Sad news of the passing away of legendary musician #BappiLahiri ji 🙏🏻 he will be fondly remembered for his mesmerising musical compositions which are loved by people of all ages. My condolences to the family. RIP #BappiDa ॐ शान्ति,” Yuvraj tweeted.

Producer Ashoke Pandit on Bappi Lahiri: “Shocked to hear about the demise of rockstar #BappiLahiri ji. Can’t believe my next door neighbour is no more. Your music will always remain in our hearts. ॐ शान्ति !” tweeted the producer.

Bappi Lahiri was born on November 27, 1952 in West Bengal to a family of singers. An only child, the composer got his first break in the industry through the 1973 film Nanha Shikari.

Bappi Lahiri composed songs for movies such as Disco Dancer, Himmatwala, Sharaabi, Adventures of Tarzan, Dance Dance, Satyamev Jayate, Commando, Aaj Ke Shahenshah, Thanedaar, Numbri Aadmi and Shola Aur Shabnam, among others.

The singer-composer’s first big Bollywood hit score was for Aamir Khan’s father Tahir Hussain’s film Zakhmee.
