Cuttack: In a recent development into the Banki double-murder case, the police today arrested two persons and detained two others for interrogation.
The arrested were identified as Balia alias Balabhadra Pradhan(47) and Jitu alias Jitendra Swain (23) of Khajuripada Nuasahi. The prime accused identified as Kalia alias Susant Pradhan (40) and another accused Himanshu Bhusan Routray (39) have been also apprehended by the police today. Reportedly, the accused are being interrogated at an undisclosed location.
According to sources in the police, it is suspected that the double murder was a fallout of past rivalry.
Talking to the media person at a presser, Cuttack SP (Rural) Radhavinod Panigrahi said, “As per the investigation, there was a long-standing rivalry between the main accused and the deceased Adtiya Ranasingh, who was a popular face in the locality, for grabbing major projects worth lakhs.”
This has eventually irked the rival group following which there was a frequent dispute between the two groups, he said adding that Aditya had also thrashed a youth of the other group last year.
Following this, the rival group conspired to eliminate Aditya and started planning a month ago. As per the pre-planning, on February 15, at around 2 pm, the group intercepted Aditya and Bhagwan Swain and attacked them with sharp weapons.
The duo sustained critical injuries in the attack. While Bhagwan died while being shifted to Banki hospital, Aditya succumbed to his injuries at SCB Medical College and Hospital. However, before breathing his last, Aditya, in a mobile video, named nine persons behind the attack.
Five teams were formed under Cuttack SP (Rural) and a detailed probe was initiated. “The police teams carried out raids at different places in Banki area and apprehended four persons including the mastermind Kalia. However, 10 other suspects, in this case, are still on the run,” said SP Panigrahi. The absconding persons involved in the brutal killing will be apprehended very soon, he added.
Notably, Bhagwan Swain, husband of Khajuripada Sarpanch, and journalist Aditya Ranasingh were brutally hacked to death while they were headed to their village on a bike from the panchayat office along with another Ranjan Singh. The miscreants intercepted them near Jokalanji Dam by erecting a GI wire on the road. After the duo got entangled in the wire, the miscreants attacked them and severed their legs. Some locals came to know about the attack from Ranjan, who managed to escape from the spot and rushed the victims to the hospital. However, both of them died in succession due to fatal injuries.
On the basis of a complaint filed by Ranjan Singh, Banki police registered a case (39/20) under Sections 302,34 of the IPC and launched a probe.
