Baby swap slur on Rayagada hospital

Rayagada: Tension gripped the district headquarters hospital (DHH) here on Tuesday after a tribal couple from Kashipur block in the district alleged that some staff of the hospital swapped their newborn boy with a stillborn girl.

According to sources, the woman, who hails from Kumbharasila village in Kashipur block, was admitted to the DHH after she developed labour pain on Sunday night. She delivered a child on Monday. As the newborn’s condition deteriorated, the hospital staff took the baby to the SNCU ward.

Meanwhile, the woman’s condition also worsened and she was shifted to Koraput hospital for further treatment. Later, the hospital staff handed over a dead girl child to the woman’s relative. However, newborn’s family refused to accept the baby alleging it was not theirs.

Later, the family members staged a protest in front of the hospital demanding their baby boy back.

On the other hand, the hospital authorities refuted the allegations of the family.
