Melbourne: Serena Williams defeated Germany’s Tatjana Maria in straight sets to enter the second round at Australian Open on Tuesday.
The American just took 49 minutes to dismantle Maria with 6-0, 6-2 scoreline. Serena, will either meet Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard or Peng Shuai of China in the second round.
The 37-year-old is now attempting to match Margaret Court’s mark of 24 singles Slams on the Australian’s home soil.
It was Serena’s first outing on tour since her infamous meltdown at the umpire while losing the US Open final to Naomi Osaka in September.
Serena effortlessly broke her opponent by winning her first service game and went on to claim the first set 6-0 in just 18 minutes, blasting winners seemingly at will.
She eased up slightly in the second set with Maria snatching two games before succumbing to inevitable defeat. However, she ended the match with 6-0, 6-2 scoreline.
