Canberra: Australian field hockey player Tom Craig has received a 12-month suspension from the sport’s governing body in Australia for attempting to buy cocaine during the Paris Olympics.
Craig was detained but not charged following his attempt to acquire the substance in Paris on August 7, after completing his Olympic events.
He appeared before the Australian media in Paris once the French prosecutors confirmed that the 29-year-old Olympian, who won a silver medal in Tokyo three years prior, had been issued a criminal warning and released after a night in detention.
“After investigating the incident involving national men’s hockey team member Tom Craig at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, Hockey Australia’s Integrity Unit has decided on a 12-month suspension,” stated Hockey Australia on Wednesday.
“Half of this suspension will be actively enforced, with the other half being conditionally suspended, provided that specific conduct and behaviour standards are met.”
Hockey Australia also mentioned that Craig would still be considered for the national men’s team selection for 2025, which is set to be announced later this year. The Australian men’s team finished sixth at the Paris Olympics.
