Assembly adjourned over farmers issues

Bhubaneswar: The State Legislative Assembly was adjourned several times on Wednesday with opposition protesting over farmers’ protests of distressed sale of produce. On Tuesday, the proceedings were stalled for entire day over the same debate.

Congress leaders cited farmers across the state throwing their produce of tomatoes, brinjal and other vegetables for not being able to sell them. The suicide of Bargarh farmer Khainu Bagarti owing to financial pressure of loans was then raised which led to a commotion and the Assembly was adjourned till 11.30 am.

When the proceedings began again, leader of Opposition Narasingha Mishra stated that over 200 farmers committed suicide in 2015-16 but the state government neither accepted it nor reviewed the situation. The same situation has returned in 2017, Mishra said. He said the government has not provided lift irrigation facilitie sin many parts which is affecting farmers. He further said the government claims farmers produce 40 qunital grain per acre but buys 12 to 20 quintal produce per acre. He also cited former Chief Minister Biju Patnaik’s reaction when he once gave in writing he would fix Hirakud’s displaced people’s issues after he was questioned on that but BJD which carries his name has failed in following his legacy.

The Assembly was further adjourned till 3 pm.
