Asian Games: P V Sindhu enters badminton women’s singles semis


Jakarta: Olympic medallist P V Sindhu assured India another medal by entering the semi-finals of women’s singles badminton completion in the 18th Asian Games here on Sunday.

Olympic and world champion silver medallist Sindhu scored 21-11, 16-21, 21-14 to win over Thailand’s world number 11 Nitchaon Jindapol. Despite losing the second set of the match, Sindhu recovered smartly in the decider.

Earlier in the day, Saina Nehwal booked a place in the semi-finals. Saina Nehwal won against Thailand’s Ratchanok Intanon in straight games of 21-18, 21-16 to reach women singles semifinals.

The last Indian to win an individual medal at a continental event was legendary Syed Modi in 1982. At the Asian Games, India has won a total of eight medals in badminton event— six of them were team events and one men’s double.
