Bhubaneswar: The Commissionerate Police on Monday launched APOSSA scheme to promote sports among slum youths residing under Bhubaneswar and Cuttack Urban Police Districts (UPDs).
The All Round Promotion of Sports in Sums and Young Juveniles against Narcotics Abuse(APOSSA) has been launched by Asit Tripathy, the Additional Chief Secretary of Home Department, in the presence of Police Commissioner Satyajit Mohanty today.
The APOSSA scheme aims to proactively engage the youths of the slums for sharing the responsibility of creating a safe and secure environment. Sports and games will be the medium to engage the youths while creating awareness against narcotic substance abuse among them.
On the occasion, Mohanty said that the programme aims at promoting volleyball, basketball and other sporting activities in the slums area of the Twin Cities.
This would be an effort to build good relations and trust between the police and slum youths. They would be counselled to abstain from drug & narcotics abuse and focus on constructive activities, Mohanty added.
Similarly, DCP Anup Sahoo said that the police would regularly visit the slums to bridge the gap between the slum dwellers and the police.
Subsequently, the Commissionerate Police have sought the assistance and cooperation of the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation, Sports & Youth Services Department, Urban Development Department as associated government agencies and non-profit organisations working in the related areas for holistic implementation of the scheme.
