Shireen Abu Akleh, a journalist for Al Jazeera, was shot dead in the West Bank city of Jenin early on Wednesday during clashes between the Israeli military and Palestinians.

Ms. Abu Akleh, 51, a veteran journalist, was wearing a protective vest that identified her as a member of the news media, Al Jazeera reported.

According to reports, she was hit by a live bullet on Wednesday while covering Israeli raids in the city of Jenin and was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

The Israeli military said on Twitter that it was investigating the possibility that journalists had been injured “possibly by Palestinian armed gunfire.”

Abu Akleh was one of Al Jazeera’s first field correspondents, joining the network in 1997.
