Ahead of Bijepur bypoll, Odisha CEO holds all-party meet

Bhubaneswar: Ahead of the bypolls in Bijepur Assembly Constituency, an all-party meeting was held under the chairmanship of Odisha Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Surendra Kumar here on Tuesday.

As per reports, CEO Mr Kumar today apprised the representatives of the political parties about the announcement of by-polls for Bijepur Assembly Seat issued by the Election Commission of India (ECI), last dates for filing nominations, verification, withdrawal, voting and vote counting.

The Odisha CEO also sought cooperation from the political parties for smooth conduct of the by-election in Bijepur.

It may be mentioned here that the Model Code of Conduct has come into force in Bijepur after the announcement of the bypoll. The political parties have been urged not to put up banners, hoardings and posters in public structures. The candidates have been asked to fill up their complete details in the form no 26 and no sections should be left unfilled during submission of the poll affidavit.

If any candidate has any kind of criminal case against him/her, they have to declare/disseminate the same through electronic or print media for at least three times.

For the first time, M3 Version of EVM/VVPAT will be used in the Bijepur bypoll.

Prominent among others present in the meeting were Bharatiya Janata party (BJP) leaders Samir Mohanty, Golekh Mohapatra & Ashok Kumar Tripathy and Biju Janata Dal (BJD) general secretary Ananta Narayan Jena.

Notably, the ECI on Monday (Sept 23) issued notification for the bypoll to Bijepur Assembly Constituency in Odisha to be held on October 21.

The last date for filing nomination papers is September 30, while scrutiny of nomination papers will be held on October 1 and counting of votes will be held on October 24. Reportedly, 2,32,005 voters are eligible to cast their votes in 285 polling booths.

Notably, the Bijepur Assembly seat is lying vacant after Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik vacated the seat on June 2.
