Masoud Pezeshkian, a reformist candidate, triumphed in Iran’s presidential election. He assumes the presidency at a time when Iran confronts increasing international isolation, domestic unrest, an ailing economy, and the possibility of direct conflict with Israel.
Iran conducted snap elections following the demise of President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash, which also claimed the lives of Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and other officials in the country’s northwest in May.
