9-yr-old becomes ‘Green Ambassador’ of Manipur after video of her crying over felled tress goes viral
Imphal: While the millennial generation is busy entertaining themselves by various means and are social media stars for the same reasons, a video of a 9-year-old girl crying after the cutting of two trees she had planted went viral.
Valentina Elangbam of Manipur’s Kakching district had planted two Gulmohar saplings by the banks of a river near her home when she was in Class 1. The student of Amutombi Divine Life English School had on a daily basis tending to the saplings, which grew into trees in the last four years.
However, the two trees were cut down for a project to widen a road beside the river.
The inconsolable gardener was in tears after the incident came to her attention.
In the video that went viral, the girl is seen sobbing profusely as she sees the trees planted by her being cut down. “I planted that tree and I love it so much, and it pains me so much to see them cutting it down,” she mourned.
The video evoked a lot of appreciation and support for her in social media.
Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh, who is also very active on social media, appointed her the brand ambassador for the Chief Minister’s Green Manipur Mission scheme.
As per an order issued by the government, Valentina will be involved in various government-sponsored tree plantation programmes, including World Environment Day and Van Mahotsava among others. She will be part of government advertisements and campaigns which promote maintaining the green cover of Manipur.
