Bhubaneswar: The City Police on Saturday arrested six members of a criminal gang for allegedly drugging and looting passengers at bus and train terminus in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack.

While the identities of the accused persons were not known immediately, one of them has been identified as the owner of a medicine store in Bhubaneswar. The accused used to supply the stupifying prescription drugs to the footsoldiers of the gang without reference, said Twin City Police Commissioner Saumendra Priyadarshi.

Addressing a presser, Twin City Police Commissioner said that the gang mostly targetted passengers outside the State capital. After striking a rapport with the unsuspecting travellers, the accused used to loot them by offering spiked drinks and food.

Following such cases, a Special Squad was formed and a probe was initiated.

As many as 11-12 such cases had been registered in the Twin Cities of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar last year, the senior police said.

However, the team nabbed three prime accused, a medicine store owner and two receivers of the stolen property.

Police said three gold chains weighing 40 grams, 18 strips of medicines (sedatives), one motorcycle, six mobile phones have been recovered from the gang members.

Meanwhile, Priyadarshi has appealed to passengers to stay away from strangers and not accept any food or drink from them.
