5.7 magnitude quake rocks southwest Iran


Tehran: An earthquake measuring 5.7 magnitude on Richter scale struck southwest Iran near the border with Iraq on Monday.

The country’s national seismological centre said the epicenter of the quake was in the Masjed Soleiman area of Khuzestan province.

The quake hit the area at 11:30 am (0700 GMT) at a depth of 17 kilometres, reports said. There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties, according to state TV.

Authorities said that teams are still assessing the situation. The damage will be estimated soon, they said.
