4th Hockey India 5-a-side Senior National Ch’ship: Day 2 Results


Kanpur: After a grand opening ceremony on the first day of the competition here at the Hockey Complex, Green Park Stadium, the 4th Hockey India 5-a-side Senior National Championship Kanpur Uttar Pradesh 2019 (Women) continued here today into its second day which saw some exciting matches take place.

The Women’s category saw Hockey Jharkhand and Hockey Haryana maintain their winning run as they won their respective matches of the Pool stage, while Hockey Odisha registered their first victory in the competition as they beat Hockey Unit of Tamil Nadu in Pool A.

Hosts Uttar Pradesh Hockey and Hockey Karnataka played out a 1-1 draw in their second Pool match.

The second day saw defending Champions Hockey Jharkhand produce a convincing performance against Pool A rivals Hockey Punjab to register a 3-0 win in their second match.

Both the teams had won their opening matches on the first day as Hockey Jharkhand beat Hockey Odisha 7-3, while Hockey Punjab defeated Hockey Unit of Tamil Nadu 5-3 to start the competition on the front-foot.

However, it was Hockey Jharkhand’s day on Monday as they took all the three points. It was a very competitive match in the opening period as both teams came close to taking the lead several times, but Hockey Jharkhand were the team who got the break-through as they scored a field goal in the 9th minute through Birajini Ekka.

The initial few minutes of the second period saw Hockey Punjab push for an equalizer, but Hockey Jharkhand showed solidarity at the back, and produced two brilliant moments later in the period to win 3-0. Alka Dungdung (15′) and Betan Dungdung (17′) were the other goal-scorers for Hockey Jharkhand.

The other Pool A match saw Hockey Odisha shrug off their opening day 3-7 loss to the defending Champions, as they beat Hockey Unit of Tamil Nadu 5-0. A brace from Dipti Lakra (1′, 14′) helped Hockey Odisha open their account on the points table, with Khusbu Kujur (3′), Rinki Kujur (9′) and Premita Bara (18′) also scored for them.

Hockey Odisha scored three of their goals in the opening period, and then wrapping up the win with two more goals in the second period. The win for Hockey Odisha means they now sit on second spot in Pool A with three points from their opening two matches, ahead of Hockey Punjab on goal difference.

Last year’s runners up Hockey Haryana also maintained their 100% record in the competition as they beat Hockey Maharashtra 5-2 in their second Pool B match. The match saw both teams score a goal each in the opening period with Aishwarya Chavan giving Hockey Maharashtra the lead in the 4th minute, and Hockey Haryana’s Deepika cancelling the lead in the 8th minute.

The second period saw Hockey Maharashtra take the lead for the second time in the match as Preeti Dubey scored a field goal in the 12th minute, but Hockey Haryana produced a fantastic performance in the remaining minutes to score four goals and overturn the score-line. Deepika scored three more goals in the 15th, 18th and 19th minute along with a goal from Captain Annu in the 17th minute to give Hockey Haryana all three points.

The other Pool B match saw hosts Uttar Pradesh Hockey and Hockey Karnataka play out a thrilling 1-1 draw to end the day. It was Hockey Karnataka who took the lead in the 8th minute through a brilliant field goal scored by their Captain Leelavathy M J Mallamada.

Hockey Karnataka did well to hold on to their one-goal advantage through the majority of the second period but spurred on by their home supporter, Uttar Pradesh Hockey produced a moment of brilliance in the 19th minute to equalize as Lalrin Diki scored a field goal. The draw means that Uttar Pradesh Hockey occupies the second spot in Pool B with four points, while Hockey Karnataka remains win-less, sitting on the third spot with a solitary point.

Action in the 4th Hockey India 5-a-side Senior National Championship Kanpur Uttar Pradesh 2019 (Women) will continue on Tuesday, with all the eight teams playing their respective third Pool matches.
