16 squads to tackle elephant menace
Keonjhar: A day after a herd of elephants strayed into a village in Keonjhar district, the forest department on Tuesday formed 16 squads to drive the animals out of the village.
The squads were formed after the villagers urged the forest department officials to take immediate action to drive away the animals from human habitations to nearby forest.
According to sources, a herd of elephants from neighbouring Jharkhand ventured into the village area in search of food on September 2. The elephants then strayed into the human settlement and damaged the houses and standing crops.
Meanwhile, the villagers kept them ready with torch lights and firecrackers to drive the elephants away from their villages.
