Angul: As many as 13 elderly people are at risk of losing their sight due to a botched eye surgery at a private clinic in Odisha’s Angul district. After the patients complained of vision loss in one eye and were shifted to other hospitals, the district administration today sealed the clinic.
On the 20th of June, 13 patients underwent cataract surgery at Pradhan Eye Care Nursing Home by Dr. Biswajit Dey. However, after 24 hours of the operation, the patients complained of severe pain due to and again reached the nursing home. However, the owner, Dr. Chandrashekhar Pradhan, sent them to VIMSAR in Burla. After diagnosis in Burla, 11 of them were admitted for treatment.
After the allegations of this botched operation surfaced, a team was formed under the leadership of District NPCB Chief Dr. Parmeshwar Jena and District Family Welfare Officer Dr. Antaryami Mishra. After an investigation, the nursing home was sealed by the administration on Thursday.
Angul District Collector Abdaal Akhtar said, “Necessary action will be taken in this case. Another complaint has also been filed against this nursing home.”
According to the complaint, Bailochan Pradhan’s wife Pranati Pradhan of Bagedia had undergone cataract surgery at the clinic in May and was charged Rs 13,000 for the operation. However, when she turned up again complaining of pain, she was allegedly denied a doctor’s appointment.
Doctor Pradhan, the owner of the nursing home, gave her some medicine and told her to come back after 40 days. With no other options left, Pradhan underwent another surgery at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar.
