Nayagarh: A local court in Nayagarh on Tuesday sentenced a youth to seven years rigorous imprisonment after convicting him in a rape case in 2010.
The court also imposed a penalty of Rs 50,000 on the accused, Rajesh Kumar Mahapatra, failing which he will have to undergo an additional jail term of one year.
The local court judge, Projyoti Rout, pronounced the verdict after examining the statements of six witnesses in the case.
According to sources, Rajesh, a resident of Kantilo village near Khandapara in Nayagarh district on February 5, 2010, told his niece that his mother was calling her for some work. As the girl went with him, the accused locked her in a room and raped her.
Later, the girl narrated her ordeal to her family following which the family members informed the matter to the village committee. The village committee convened a meeting to settle the issue mutually. The committee asked Rajesh to marry the victim. However, Rajesh demanded Rs 1 lakh as dowry to marry the victim.
Later, the family members of the victim lodged a complaint with the police and the accused was arrested.
