New Delhi: Wrestler Vinesh Phogat won a gold medal in the 50kg women’s freestyle event, India’s second gold medal and first-ever gold in women’s wrestling, on the second day of the Asian Games 2018 on Monday.
Earlier, Bajrang Punia snatched the spotlight from fading superstar Sushil Kumar to open India’s gold account on Sunday at the mega event.
With this victory, Vinesh became the first Indian woman wrestler to win an Asian Games gold. Vinesh completely dominated the contest, taking a 4-0 lead initially before stretching it further to 6-2 to pocket the yellow metal.
Vinesh has been in top form today at the Asian Games, winning her semi-final against Daulatbike Yakshimuratova of Uzbekistan in just 75 seconds by technical superiority.
On the other hand, Sakshi Malik paid the price for being over-defensive in the 62kg women’s wrestling. Olympic medallist Sakshi was left to fight for bronze and so was CWG silver medallist Pooja Dhanda after losing her semifinal in the 57kg.
