Bhubaneswar: The World Meteorological Day was celebrated here by the Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre on Thursday.
Programmes based on this year’s theme ‘Understanding Clouds’ were arranged. Exhibition consisting of Meteorological posters on Phailin, Hoodhood, thunderstorm and climate change were put up. Besides, weather warning systems and all type of meteorological instruments were arranged. Special Balloon was released and meteorological parameters such as pressure, temperature, humidity and wind direction as well as wind speed data were collected up to about 37 kms height from surface.
Different meteorological documentary video related to climate change, sea breeze and tornado and speech of World Meteorological Organization (WMO) General Secretary were shown on screen using projector to students and visitors.
Around 300 to 400 students along with their teachers of different schools visited the centre on the occasion. Prizes were distributed among students who won various competitions.
A lecture session was arranged in the ITER premises. ITER Prof PK Sahoo, IIT Emeritus Prof UC Mohanty, Prof Manas Das, IMD Regional Director Dr SC Sahu, students of Utkal University Geography Department, ITER and IIT and India Meteorological Society members were also present.
