Kendrapara: Hundreds of woman agitators faced off with police personnel during their protest against liquor shops in Marshaghai area of Kendrapara district on Wednesday.
According to sources, more than 200 agitating women gathered at a place on Wednesday morning and blocked Kendrapara-Orata road demanding the removal of two liquor shops located at Angulai Square.
“A country and a foreign liquor shops are situated at Angulai Square. Schoolchildren and college goers pass through the road and face considerable inconvenience due to the liquor shops. Besides, the women and girls feel unsafe due to the presence of liquor shops in the locality,” the agitating women alleged.
“We have brought the issue to the notice of the administration. However, the administration did not take any measures in this regard so far. So we have resorted to the road blocking protest,” the agitators added.
Sarpanch Durgabati Pradhan on behalf of the agitating women demanded a complete ban on liquor in Angulai panchayat area.
As a precautionary measure, one platoon of police was deployed at the agitation site to thwart any untoward incident.
Meanwhile, the protesters tried to vandalise the liquor shops. When the police tried to stop the protestors, a minor face-off ensued between them.
Vehicular movement on the route was also disrupted due to the agitation.
