Nabarangpur: A 45-year-old woman farmer, who had allegedly consumed pesticide due to loan burden in Tentulikhunti block of Nabarangpur district, died on Saturday.
The deceased has been identified as Padma Muduli, wife of Madhab Muduli of Aaunlipadar village in the district.
Reportedly, Padma was part of a 10-member Self Help Group (SHG) named Sairam Self Help Group that had taken a loan of Rs 3 lakh from a finance company.
Padma had grown maize on her farmland with the loan money. She was repaying the loan to the finance company through monthly installment of Rs 1,660. However, she suffered loss in the farming due to rain and was in depression on apprehension that she could not pay the next installment scheduled for September 10.
Apprehending harassment by the finance company for non-payment of installment, Padma consumed pesticide on Friday afternoon. She was immediately rushed to Tentulikhunti community health centre. She was being shifted to the district headquarters hospital today when she died en route.
Following her death, Padma’s husband Madhab alleged that the pressure by the finance company pushed Padma to take this drastic step.
Khatiguda police reached the hospital and launched a probe into the matter.
