Bhubaneswar: Unusual start ups have been set up in the last few years providing services never heard of before. In fact, now a few non-resident Odias have teamed up to make funeral services available to Odia people through the swargadwara.com that was launched on Friday. The online services make it easy for the family of bereaved to conduct the last rites easily without being troubled for the logistics of the funeral during the mourning period.
Keeping in mind the Odia culture and tradition, the website was named Swargadwara which is synonymous with the crematory centre of Jagannath temple in Puri. Plaban and Sujata Mohapatra, based in USA, have started the website.
Plaban conceived the idea when he heard from his younger brother how he had to run around for 13 days to arrange all the requirements and logistics for his father-in-law’s funeral and post funeral rituals. “My brother’s job location being out of state, it contributed to his unfamiliarity with local vendors and hence had to struggle to ensure that all rituals were followed religiously, thus making things tougher for him. That was when the idea of offering a one point co-ordinated service for such unfortunate occasions came across my mind so that the people concerned do not have to run around for all the arrangements and instead have a single point service provider at their disposal,” he said. With support coming in from family and friends Plaban resolved to go ahead with his idea of “Swargadwara”.
“Currently the funeral and other related ritual services are provided only in the jurisdiction of Bhubaneswar and Jatani in the state of Odisha, with ambitious plans to expand to other cities in near future. At present the services are being offered to cater to the Hindu masses with the hope of expanding our services to followers of other religions & faith in future,” said Sujata, the co-founder.
The association would work by arranging the funeral and post funeral last rites of the departed one by providing a single point platform which will assist the bereaved family in conducting the rituals. The various services offered by the association includes, funeral van arrangements, ritual logistics for funeral day, logistics for daily karma, arrangement of Maha Prasad, priest, tent house related activities, cook and cooking arrangements, Sakirtana Mandali, clothing, printing of invitation cards, building memorial and others.
The website was launched by Mayor Ananta Narayan Jena.
