Kendrapara: Vigilance sleuths today arrested an IIC and a havildar of Odisha police on charges of demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 5,000 for not to arrest an accused.
The arrested have been identified as Nilakantha Prasad Patra, IIC, Kendrapara Sadar police station and Crime Havildar Debendra Prasad Nayak.
According to reports, a woman, identified as Priyambada Panda of Konsora village had filed a complaint against Chinmaya Kar at Kendrapara Sadar police station, following which police registered a case and started an investigation.
When Chinmaya came to know that he is going to be arrested, he contacted the IIC and requested not to arrest him.
However, the police official demanded Rs 10,000 for not arresting the accused.
Chinmaya had paid Rs 5000 to Nilakantha for the same, but the latter again demanded Rs 5000, following which the former reported the matter to Vigilance SP, Cuttack.
A trap was laid today to catch the IIC. Around 12:25 pm, when the official was accepting the bribe money Rs 5,000 from Chinmaya through Crime Havildar Debendra, Vigilance officials caught the duo red-handed.
The sleuths have also conducted search operations at the official residence of the IIC and the ancestral house of the Crime Havildar.
