Puri: Odisha Vigilance sleuths today arrested a Forest Range Officer (FRO) on charges of demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 35,000 for issuing timber transport permit in Puri.
The arrested has been identified as Sahaji Charan Biswal, FRO, Brahmagiri range under Puri Wild Life DFO.
According to reports, the complainant Niranjan Pradhan, a timber businessman, had sold 44 trips of casuarinas from a plantation of Gurudatta Palei’s recorded land with his due permission and timber transport permission of the forest department.
However, the accused demanded Rs 35,000 for transportation of rest 7 trips to give timber transportation permit from Puri ACF.
The complainant reported the matter to SP, Vigilance, Bhubaneswar Division, following which a trap was laid.
This evening while Sahaji was accepting the bribe amount from Niranjan, Vigilance sleuths caught him red-handed.
The Vigilance sleuths are conducting search operation at his residential house at Samantarapur in Bhubaneswar. He will be forwarded to court after completion of paperwork, informed an official.
