Bhubaneswar: Utkal University administration today cancelled the students’ union elections and declared sine die until further orders.
“The students’ union election scheduled to be held on September 23 stands cancelled,” a notification issued by the varsity read.
All inmates of boys and girls hostels have been asked to vacate their rooms by 6 pm today, following prevailing tension in the campus and prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPC have been clamped at the main gate to avoid any untoward situation.
Entry of outsiders has been strictly restricted. Students, staff and hostel employees are allowed into the campus on a production of proper identity proof, reports said.
Meanwhile, a group of students ransacked the vice chancellor’s office after a dharna protesting cancellation of the polls.
Notably, while the campus was tensed following the polls, yesterday some miscreants allegedly hurled bombs at a women’s hostel of the varsity and vice chancellor’s office that led to the cancellation of the elections.
