Cuttack: The multi-crore Uliburu mining scam has a new turn when Odisha Mining Corporation (OMC) ex-deputy director Manas Mohanty got bail from a special Vigilance court on Thursday.
The illegal mining of iron ore from Uliburu mines and reserved forest area in Keonjhar district had come to light in 2013. State government had lost Rs 839.67 crores due to the illegal mining as per Vigilance department’s evaluation. Snehapushpa Marketing private limited director Deepak Gupta and Champak Gupta and Deepak Steel and Power Limited director Deepak Gupta and his three family members as well as ex-deputy director Mohanty were among the 25 persons against whom cases have been filed in this connection.
Deepak Gupta arrested on September 4, 2013 had cited health issues and admitted to SCB Medical but was found spending his time in a lavish hotel. Later, vigilance had arrested Mohanty on June 27, 2015. After his bail plea was rejected by special vigilance court and Orissa High Court he had applied for bail in Supreme Court. The apex Court provided him conditional bail in lieu of Rs 1 lakh bail bond and two bailers.
