Bhubaneswar/Kandhamal: Several initiatives by Odisha Police to stop sexual assaults of minor girls seem to have little impact in the state with two fresh cases of rape of minor girls coming to light in Bhubaneswar and Kandhamal district on Monday.
In the first instance, a minor girl was raped by an auto-rickshaw driver and his associate in Khajuripada police limits of Kandhamal district. On the basis of the complaint lodged by the victim’s father, the police have arrested the accused duo.
According to sources, the minor girl had gone to Laipada daily market and hired the auto-rickshaw to reach home on Saturday evening. On her way back home, the auto-rickshaw driver, identified as Phute Sethi, and his associate Petu Sethi forcibly took the girl to a nearby forest and sexually assaulted her.
“Based on the complaint of the victim’s father, we nabbed the accused duo immediately,” sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) of Phulbani Surendra Nath Murmu said.
In another shameful incident, a 60-year-old contractor, identified as Pramod Kumar Singh, repeatedly raped his 12-year-old domestic help at Padma Vihar area of Chandrasekharpur in the city.
According to sources, victim’s father works as a labourer in Gujarat. The victim’s grandfather left her at Singh’s house two months back to work in his house. However, Singh repeatedly raped her in his house while others family members were away.
Meanwhile, the victim somehow managed to escape from the house yesterday and took shelter in Nila Padia Basti. Later, she narrated her ordeal to some residents who took her to Chandrasekharpur police station and lodged a complaint. The accused contractor is absconding after the lodging of the case.
Bhubaneswar DCP Anup Sahoo said a case has been registered under POCSO act and further probe is underway.
