Nayagarh: Two minor boys were killed in a firing during a group clash that broke out between the residents of Panibhandar village in Golagaon panchayat and Badhisahi of Kajaleipalli panchayat in Nayagarh district on Saturday.
According to sources, the residents of the two villages engaged in a violent clash at around 11 am over digging of a pond by the soil conservation department. Both the deceased were minors.
Four others including two minors sustained critical injuries in the clash. The condition of one of the injured, Chandan Pradhan, was stated to be critical and he was shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.
According to sources, the soil conservation department is planning to dig a community pond in Kajalaipalli gram panchayat at a cost of Rs 1.45 lakh under integrated watershed management programme (IWMP).
The residents of Panibhandar village alleged that if the pond is dug, it will obstruct water and hundred acres of their paddy field will submerge causing huge loss to paddy crop.
Despite repeated pleas of Panibhandar residents, the residents of Badhisahi allowed the soil conservation department to dig the pond on the land. The disagreement took an ugly turn on Saturday when the residents of both villages engaged in a clash over the issue.
During the clash, residents of Badhisahi allegedly opened fire at the rival group. Ram Pradhan (17) and Silu Pradhan (17) died in the firing. Gobardhan Pradhan and Sharat Pradhan, fathers of the minors, sustained critical bullet injuries in the firing. Similarly, Manoj Swain and Chandan Pradhan also sustained injuries.
While Panibhandar village remained tense after the incident, all the male members of Badhisahi fled the village. Police forces were deployed in the villages to thwart further untoward incident.
