Bhubaneswar: The Nayagarh district police on Tuesday busted an interstate racket, involved in theft of expensive materials from telecom towers in different districts, by arresting six persons.
Those arrested were identified as Abakas Parida, Sudhir Praharaj, Jatin Jena, Purushottam Pradhan, Ajit Patra and Jitendra Rout. Stolen property worth over Rs 50,000 has been recovered.
Nayagarh district’s superintendent of police Kanwar Vishal Singh said the accused were former employees of some tower manufacturing firms. “The accused were highly professional technicians having knowledge of mobile towers. They were former employees of different tower industries,” Singh said.
“We found the accused were involved in theft of cell tower materials in Nayagarh, Khurda and Bhubaneswar. They were active in Nayagarh since past one year. We had formed three squads to track their movements,” the district police chief said.
Police sources said the accused targeted 15 towers in Nayagarh district, 10 in Khurda district and 5 in Bhubaneswar. Police denied the accused had any previous criminal antecedents. “We strongly suspect the complicity of some insiders of the telecom companies or agencies that installed the towers behind the offence. We will also arrest those, who received or purchased the stolen tower equipment from the accused,” Singh said.
