Bhubaneswar: Price of tomato has crossed the Rs 100 mark in Bhubaneswar market while in retail outlets the price has gone up to Rs 120 per kg. Due to short supply of the vegetable its price has skyrocketed to Rs 80 per kg from Rs 30 per kg about a fortnight ago. About two months ago the price of tomato was between Rs 15 to Rs 20 per kilo.
After the price hike the necessary ingredient has gone off the menu from most household kitchens, while restaurants and food joints are the worst affected as they have to compromise with taste.
Sources said, the supply of tomatoes has gone down more than 60% to the market so is the consumption. Normally around 1000 tonnes of tomatoes are consumed across the state the quantity has reduced to 100 to 150 tonnes in the last few weeks.
