Nabarangpur: Superstition related to branding of children to cure them of common ailments refuses to stop in Odisha as it has surfaced again in Nabarangpur district.
According to reports, a 14-month-old baby was branded with hot iron on his head, nose, shoulder and neck by his own family members at Nishinahandi village of Nandahandi block in the district, in a bid to cure him from fever.
Reportedly, the 14-month-old son of Damu Majhi was suffering from fever following which the family initially took him to a quack, who administered him some medicines. When the child’s body temperature failed to drop the child’s aunt branded him hot iron at different parts of the body on Tuesday.
However the condition of the baby worsened even more and he was rushed to the Nabarangpur District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) on Tuesday night.
When asked doctor Debabrata Dakua said, “The baby is suffering from pneumonia after being branded with the hot iron and his condition is critical.” He added that the child may be shifted to Koraput DHH if his condition remains serious.
