Three held for extortion bid under Maoist garb in Koraput

Koraput: Police on Tuesday arrested three persons including a contractor and his two associates from Bandhugaon area in Narayanpatna block of Koraput district for allegedly extorting money from people by posing as Maoists.

They were identified as Muruli Krishna, a contractor, of Paralakhemundi and his two associates— Talathu Hueika and Lokanath Pangi of Kelubada village.

The accused were arrested by Bandhugaon police who seized Rs 1.70 lakh from their possession.

According to sources, the accused persons had been threatening people and extorting money from them by identifying themselves as rebels. The trio had allegedly demanded Rs 40 lakh extortion from Mitu Nayak, a contractor. They had also threatened to torch vehicles of the contractor engaged in construction work if he fails to pay up the extortion money.

Eventually, Nayak had lodged a complaint with Koraput Superintendent of Police (SP) in this regard. Bandhugaon police conducted a raid on the house of Muruli and nabbed him. Subsequently, Muruli’s two aides were also arrested.

The arrested were produced in a court, the police said.
