Bhubaneswar: Block Grant Teachers and employees clashed with police here on Tuesday in front of the assembly demanding equal pay for equal work. They had also agitated on Monday.
Thousands of teachers participated in the rally which started from Station square towards the State Assembly and clashed with the police at the lower PMG square shouting slogans and jumping the barbed wire fence under prohibited area in front of the state assembly. Over 100 teachers have been detained by the police here.
The teachers demanded for salary at par with the salary of the government teachers .They threatened to boycott the upcoming panchayat elections by staging protest all across the state on every Saturday and Sunday from December 24 till the elections are over. Following the agitation, police arrested many teachers of different blocks.
Block Grant Secondary School Teachers and Employees’ Association president Prashant Mohapatra said that they have been protesting since last many years to provide equal payment to the teachers of equal qualifications and experience. But the government is yet to take any step acting to the grievances of the teachers.
Around 40,000 teachers and staffs of 2608 newly aided secondary schools participated in the agitation.
