New Delhi: The Supreme Court today cleared the ongoing tussle between the Centre and the democratically elected Arvind Kejriwal government over who wields the power to administer and govern the national capital.
A five-judge Constitution Bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Mishra has pronounced its verdict that Delhi government has power in all areas except land, police and public order and the Lt. Governor is bound by the aid and advice of the NCT govt in areas other than those exempted.
“The states should enjoy freedom without unsolicited interference from the centre…popular will cannot be allowed to lose its purpose,” the court said, asserting that the Lt Governor must not be obstructionist.
“A big victory for the people of Delhi…a big victory for democracy… “, Kejriwal twitted.
