Bhubaneswar : The Nabanirman Krushak Sangathan (NKS) is staging a mass convention on Wednesday for which the commissionerate police has made elaborate security arrangements in view of the mega rally to be conducted from Hi-Tech Medical college square to Lower PMG. The police in this connection on Tuesday has arrested the NKS State Convenor Akshaya Kumar and Seshadeba Nanda and has also detained hundreds of farmers so as to prevent them from joining the convention.
Earlier in December 2013, the NKS activists had come before the Chief Minister near Secretariat protesting the apathy of the government towards the farming community. The Sangathan since long has been fighting for pension, adequate compensation for the farmers who had been affected by the cyclone ‘Phailin’ and subsequent floods, additional bonus of Rs 500 per quintal of paddy over the minimum support price fixed by the centre, effective marketing system and cold storage facility and provision of seeds and fertilizers for farmers.
Twin city Police Commissioner YB Khurania said that to ensure law and order situation, adequate security arrangements has been made for the mass convention. Many farmers were detained at Cuttack railway station who had boarded Barbil-Puri Express train to Bhubaneswar. Some were also detained at Keonjhar, Bhadrak, Balasore and Jajpur. Besides, many were also taken into preventive custody in Bhubaneswar railway station who had come to the city for the rally.
Khurania said that the elaborate security arrangements are made in the city ahead of the farmers mass convention which includes around 50 platoons of police have been deployed including one Additional Commissioner of Police(ACP), two Deputy Commissioner of Police(DCP), four Additional DCPs, six Superintendent of Police(SPs), 16 Inspectors, 100 Sub-Inspectors(Sis) and Assistant Sub-Inspectors(ASIs), three units of QRT team and officers of special branch. High security arrangements has been made in the areas around Vidhan Sabha, Lower PMG, AG Square and Naveen Niwas. Armed forces have been deployed in the route lines of the Chief Minister. Besides, route lines would be kept under ‘No man zone’ for 15 minutes.
Khurania has also warned that any miscreant attempting to create any unwanted situation would be taken into custody.
As per report, the duo of NKS arrested earlier on Monday, in Jharpada jail in the city has begun fast protesting the arrest. Though the jail authorities have tried to persuade them to take food, they did not move from their demand of their early release from the jail.
