power for all by 2019

Bhubaneswar : The state government has planned to ensure power supply to all villages across the state by the year 2019. The decision was taken after Chief Minister alongwith other ministers reviewed the implementation of rural electrification programme in the state during a meeting at Secretariat in the city on Friday.

The meeting revealed that in 2015-16, the state government has provided electricity connectivity to 2156 villages in the state, with currently 1318 more villages remaining to be electrified. These will be covered by May, 2017. It was also insisted for the Energy department to provide electricity to Below Poverty Line (BPL) families on a priority basis.

Till date around 64 lakh households in the state have been provided with electricity supply. The state government has decided to provide electricity to rural villages and households in backward districts of Nuapada, Malkangiri, Kandhamal and Nabarangpur on priority basis by February 2017.

He has also asked the department to provide electricity to all hostels for scheduled tribe and scheduled caste students. Besides, electricity connection to primary health care centres would also be provided on a priority basis to strengthen healthcare services in rural areas.

Of the planned 500 units of 33/11 KV substations to be installed, 434 are meant to supply power to rural areas.
