Staff council fails to provide solution as Ravenshaw polls still on hold
Cuttack: As the agitation prevailed in the Ravenshaw University with students’ group protesting against the new model of election which forced the varsity authorities to keep the election in abeyance till further notice, the election has not been abolished either.
As per reports, the staff council meeting held in the meanwhile, couldn’t reach any conclusion and saw a difference in the opinions regarding the election to be conducted toward students’ union or students’ council.
It may propel the student unrest till uncertainty, if the varsity authorities chose to be inflexible in their decision.
In the view of ongoing protest by the members of Akhila Baharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), All India Democratic Students’ Organisation (AIDSO), BCJD, Congress youth wing and aspiring student leaders, probably the students’ council election might get entirely abolished this time and the varsity might not see any other election taking place, as per reports. However, University authorities have not clarified anything regarding the same.
Notably, with an aim to check political interference and poll related violence on the university campus, Ravenshaw authorities this year has abolished the direct polls to students’ union, and introduced an alternative model of election which was scheduled to be held on 22nd and 23rd August, 2017.
As per the new model, students will elect their class representatives and among them a convener and deputy convener will be elected for the nine schools, but the agitated students announced to observe Ravenshaw bandh on these aforesaid dates pushing the varsity authorities to postpone the polls.
