Sonia Gandhi to step down after UP, Punjab polls

New Delhi: Congress President Sonia Gandhi is likely to resign from her position after UP and Punjab Assembly polls, reliable sources close to party said.

Gandhi will step down from party president post citing health reasons. Sources said her health condition do not allow her to remain engaged for more. Despite being unwell and wanting to step down much earlier she has kept going till only to seniors in the party who have asked her to control the reins till polls in both the states are done.

Both states are crucial for the development of the party before the general elections of 2019, since of late the party’s political presence has diminished steadily in the country.

Meanwhile, it could be a stepping stone for the Vice President Rahul Gandhi to take up the mantle but so far any core decision has not been made, party sources said.

At a recent Congress Working Committee (CWC) meet unanimous discussions on formally handing out the baton to Rahul were agreed to and in next meeting the dates and formal proceedings regarding change of power could be done, the sources said.
